Lessons from a RunStreak & Chris D’Elia

This past weekend my running streak hit 100 days! When I first started the running streak back in March I had no idea how long I would last and in the interest of full disclosure, I struggled to run a full mile without stopping. I could run a few miles with run/walk intervals, but not a whole mile straight.

100 days later my easy days are 2-3 miles, my longer runs are 6-8 miles, I have taken almost ten minutes off my 5k time, and I’ve run in seven different states.

And I’ve learned some valuable lessons along the way.

I rarely listen to music when I run but instead use the time to think and process through life. So over the last 100 days I’ve thought a lot about what I was learning from this running streak, but it wasn’t until I listened to an interview with Chris D’elia (one of my favorite comedians) that I realized one of the lessons I’ve learned.

In his interview (I believe it was a Fighter and the Kid podcast) Chris talked about his success with stand up comedy and one thing in particular really stood out to me…Chris talked about working on his material by sometimes doing 3 sets a night, six-seven nights a week. Y’all, that‘s dedication to being successful!

And that’s when I realized…

How to build new habits that lead to success

Small choices made every day consistently, build good habits that lead you down the road to success.

For Chris that meant performing night after night even when it would have been easier to take a night off.

For my running streak that meant making the choice to run every single day whether I wanted to or not.

Printable for creating new habits that lead to success
I am a visual person so I created this printable to keep track of my progress on creating the new habit and you can download your own Building Habits Printable to get started on the road to success!

  1. Select something you can do every day for 25 days that will help you reach your goals and be successful in business, health, life, family, etc…mine was running (at least) a mile.
  2. Once you complete the task each day write in the date and then repeat for 25 days…I’m now past day 100 and on my fifth tracker!

I’d love to hear in the comments below, what new habit are you going to create this summer that will help you be successful in business, health, life, family, etc?

p.s. the running streak is still going strong and at this point, I’m not sure how to end it!

And also, even though he’s known for being funny, I think that Chris’ success is inspiring and I’ve added him to my wish list of people to interview for the Be Inspired series…maybe I’ll get lucky and he’ll read this and get in touch so I can interview him!
