Tis the season for holiday parties filled with calorie laden foods and drinks and a calendar so packed it might be difficult to make it to the gym. So how do you stay healthy during the holidays…with these healthy holiday tips!
Find time to be active – The truth is you’re probably going to eat more than you should this time of year so balance the extra calories with extra exercise. If you’re shopping at the mall, find a parking space further away to log a few extra steps, create holiday traditions that involve being active like ice skating, sledding, or a family 5k (there are some fun Santa and Ugly Sweater runs out there!)
Choose your indulgences carefully…if you’re obsessed with Aunt Rosa’s cookies, then skip the ones you only kind of like from your other relatives…don’t indulge on everything available!
Practice portion control – It’s okay to eat one treat at your work Christmas party, but you probably don’t need to eat ten of them!
Plate your food…If you’re at a holiday party don’t spend the whole evening grazing at the buffet table. Grazing means you’ll end up eating way more than you should! Instead, prepare a plate of food and then stick to that!
Bring healthy food…If you’re attending potluck holiday events, bring along a reasonably healthy dish. This way you’ll know there is at least one healthy option to choose from at dinner time.
I first came across Jared’s website (Click here to visit Tone-and-Tighten.com.) last summer when I was looking for some fresh workout ideas…and was instantly hooked! His site is filled with tons of workouts and one of my favorite parts is that they don’t all require a gym and lots of equipment…which means there are no excuses to not workout!
And here’s the great news…if you feel overwhelmed and aren’t really sure what workouts you should do, when you should do them, how many you need to do a week, etc then his new e-books are the solution for you! You can choose from the beginner or advanced versions of the 8-week workout guide designed to help you take your fitness to the next level (or get moving if you’ve never worked out before!)…bottom line, I would HIGHLY recommend checking out these two amazing e-books and be inspired by Jared’s desire to see more people get in shape, be active and feel more confident!
It is my hope that you leave this blog feeling inspired. Whether you spend 2 minutes reading the blog every month or check the blog on a daily basis, it is my hope that when you click away from my site you leave inspired. Inspired to try something new. Inspired to step out of your comfort zone. Inspired to embrace a new challenge. Inspired to make a difference. Inspired to dream big and chase those dreams. Inspired to live life a little bit different. Inspired to be the best you possible. This series introduces you to people and stories that inspire me and it is my hope that they will inspire you as well.
What dream are you currently pursuing?
At this point in my life, my current dream is just to help more people get in shape, get active, and feel better about themselves. I love being an instrument that can change people’s lives for better, both through physical therapy and a healthy lifestyle. My website is the perfect platform for me to share that message and I love it!
What is your biggest dream?
Bringing health and fitness into the lives of as many people as possible – I am passionate about helping people and I would love for a healthy lifestyle to be something that is part of everyone’s lives. I hope that people who visit my website find at least one post that they can connect with and that hopefully sparks a healthy change in their lives.
What accomplishment are you most proud of in your life?
One of my biggest dreams came true this year – I was able to turn my blogging hobby into a career. I left my full-time job as a physical therapist and now only work 2-3 days a week as a physical therapist. The rest of my time is spent at home with my family and working on my website, which I have become quite passionate about. I love helping my patients become more active and feel better about themselves in the clinic and it has been so fun to be able to broaden my reach outside the clinic with my website.
Who has been an inspiration to you and how have they inspired you?
My wife has been a big inspiration to me. She is a great example to me of a loving parent, supportive spouse, and a hard worker. She started me on this blog journey and has been so encouraging as I have grown and made some big career choices.
How do you handle obstacles that arise as you pursue your dreams?
I think that at some point, every person is going to run into obstacles. It’s what you do when you encounter those obstacles that makes all the difference. I once heard a quote that has stuck with me ever since: “When obstacles arise, you change your direction to get to your goal; you do not change your decision to get there.” -Zig Ziglar
You take them one obstacle at a time and learn to roll with the punches. Every obstacle you overcome will make you that much stronger – power through!
Can you share five interesting facts about yourself?
-Even though I am a health blogger, I hate seafood.
-I was on my high school golf team.
-I am allergic to bunnies (much to my children’s disappointment).
-I go over to Europe once a year as a volunteer to fit people for wheelchairs to would not be able to afford one or need a replacement. My church supplies all the wheelchairs for free. It’s an amazing experience.
-I have a fake front tooth because my little brother knocked it out while we were playing football.
I hope Jared inspires you! What is your favorite way to workout?

What do you do this time of year to start getting ready for swimsuit season?
Disclaimer: In exchange for my honest review of this product, I was provided a free workout system.
Y’all I am beyond excited about the March Madness workout I’m sharing with you today! Y’all know I love working out while I watch TV and if your TV is tuned to gazillions of March Madness basketball games in the next few days then it’s time to get off the couch during one of those games for a March Madness inspired workout!
If you’re not sure why you should try out this March Madness workout take a minute to think about the reality that the time we spend watching the Tournament is about 100 times the amount of time it took to build the Empire State Building…that’s a lot of hours watching TV! So it probably wouldn’t hurt most of us to spend one or two of those games workout out instead of just sitting on the couch watching!
Another reason to try this is because I think doing these TV workouts is just more fun than a regular workout! But be warned that in the final minutes of the game, you’ll be probably be doing a LOT of squats, so get ready!
First of all, if you are a blogger, make sure sure you check out the Blog Staycation I’m co-hosting later this month…it’s going to be amazing!
This past weekend I celebrated my birthday and for me, birthdays are more about fresh starts than even New Years! For me, my birthday represents a chance to look ahead to the new year and start fresh. So this year I decided I wanted to try and so how many consecutive days I could go for a run…my very own RunStreak. The beauty of going on this running streak is that I can set the “rules” and so I’m keeping them pretty simple…
-A run counts for the day if I run at least a mile (some days I do more but on days when I do Body Pump I don’t run much more than 1-2 miles)
Yup, those are all of my rules! So far I’m at four days…and here is to many more! And if you want to encourage me along the way, I sure would appreciate it because I’m sure days will come when I just don’t feel like running!
And now I have the perfect accessory for all of my runs! Here’s the thing I love about this BangBandsByLinny headband…it’s incredibly functional (a necessity if you’re heading out for a run or to hit the gym!) but it’s also super cute! Another bonus is that this headband doesn’t slip around when you’re working out so I don’t have to expend all of my workout energy on trying to keep the headband on my head…it just stays there! And it’s reversible so I can wear it two different ways!
Disclaimer: I was provided with a headband to review, but all thoughts and opinions are my own.
I know not everyone is a runner, but is there anything else in your life you want to try and do in a streak? Maybe give up sweets, take a walk, spend 15 minutes reading, or so many other options!
Piloxing is a combination of dancing, boxing, and Pilates and I guarantee you will walk out of class having completed an excellent workout. One of the things I love about the program is the high energy and great music because if you’re anything like me, a boring workout is not motivating and therefore I’ll probably skip it. There are three different ways you can do the Piloxing workout…
Piloxing – The original workout that will leave you fully aware of all of your muscles!
Piloxing Barre – The same great workout as the original class but lower impact
Piloxing Knockout – This is a brand new class designed to take your workout to a whole new level! There are 6 rounds of high-intensity training including burpees and various drills.
After checking out the workout I had the opportunity to meet with Viveca Jensen, the founder of this kick-butt workout…and walked away incredibly inspired! Viveca was a dancer in Sweden and began looking for new ways to workout after a ballet injury. What stood out to me the most about my conversation with Viveca is her vision to create a fitness program that helps women realize they can, “Kick ass AND be sexy!” She loves group fitness and that is evident in the classes she teaches and in talking with her one-on-one. And the workout definitely meets her goal of showing women they are powerful and able to difficult things and yet still feminine.
If you’re looking for something new to mix up your fitness routine, I would highly recommend finding a Piloxing class near you!
Have you done a Piloxing class before? What do you like most about group fitness classes? What is your favorite class?
