Let’s Talk Training Thursday: Goals

This week we’re going to be talking about my goals for the remainder of 2014 and how I set my goals. When it comes to setting my training goals I keep a couple of things in mind…
– My travel schedule during the upcoming months. If I am going to be traveling a fair amount then I limit how much I will be training because I know I just won’t have enough time to commit to lots of training and there’s no reason to set myself up for failure!
– My Bucket List. Before setting any fitness related goals I always check out my Bucket List to see if there is anything I can train for and check off the list.
– Upcoming races. I follow quite a few fitness blogs and so whenever I hear about fun races I bookmark them so I can refer back when I’m planning my training goals. In my opinion, a fun race involves more than just running…rock n roll, wine, obstacles, foam, color bombs…or anything else that spices it up!
So what am I training for by the end of 2014?
–A Turkey Trot 5k…I haven’t decided which one to do yet…any suggestions?!?
–A virtual half-marathon…right now I’m really focused on paying off my school loans so I wasn’t sure I could justify the sometimes steep price of running an official half-marathon. I’ve seen the idea of virtual races pop up in my blog feed so I decided to give it a try! And if you live in Southern California and want to run a virtual half-marathon with me, let me know!
–Mixing it up…this isn’t a running training goal per say but in the past I’ve gotten so focused on running as my only form of cardio that this Fall I want to mix it up a little bit. I’m not entirely sure yet what this will look like but I’ll probably do some biking, a few cardio classes at the gym (the step and cycle classes are no joke!), and maybe some hiking.
What are your training goals for the remainder of 2014? If you’re not a runner I’d still love to hear your general goals for the remainder of 2014 in the comments below!

I’m definitely not a runner. I’m a walker, who also does yoga. I think for the fall I’d like to build some more strength. When the weather gets yucky and I’m back into the basement, that’s a good time for me to start pulling out the weights:)

I am also working on strength training this Fall!

Keeping a bucket list is awesome! I am checking a few off mine this year so I will have to update with more. Glad you’re linking up with us!

I totally agree with Seana! I really don’t like running at all, but I enjoy exercising! Yoga and HIIT training are the way I go.

My personal belief is that as long as you’re doing something, that’s what counts!

I love having a bucket list. I always seem to be adding to mine. As for Turkey Trot, we always support the one at our local YMCA. It’s a great fundraiser for them to support their mission in the community.

I should see if our local YMCA has anything like that!

Hi there, I found you through SITS! I’m more of a soft impact exerciser (dancing, walking, yoga), but I really respect people who can devote themselves to long-distance running. What’s your favorite race you’ve ever done? 🙂
jmdenouden@gmail.com
That’s a great question! I’m most proud of the half-marathon I ran because that took a lot of training but my favorite race would probably be a Down & Dirty race I did where there were obstacles mixed in with the running and a mud pit at the end!

I am not a runner but I admire those who are dedicated to anything that makes them feel good! I looooove lifting weights!

I need to get more info lifting weights…I think I need a trainer though because I feel soooo clueless!

I’ve been mixing things up too in terms of training! I started going to this free Zumba class that my gym offers thinking it’d be a walk in the park, but…I was sadly mistaken, hahaha. They do em’ with weights and it’s been rather humbling (but fun!) thus far! 😛 It probably didn’t help that I have no endurance whatsoever, but I’ll get there eventually! 😀

Zumba with weights?!? Oh my!

I’ve been thinking about trying a virtual race as well! It sounds like a great way to save money but still have fun.

Sonya, you should try the Color Run 5k! It’s definitely a great one if you have kids. My daughter is only 2 and she had a blast.
